wise words, foolish followers

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied"
-Matthew 5:6

I keep coming back to this verse.
In particular, the part where Jesus uses the words hunger and thirst to describe how we should be for righteousness.

Imagine being hungry and thirsty, and i mean for real, not just wanting-a-bedtime-snack hungry and thirsty, but a I-haven't-eaten-in-days hungry and thirsty.

Imagine the feeling. Stomach rumbling, mouth salavaiting at the thought of food and drink, mind thinking of nothing else.

Longing
Craving
Desire

You would do anything to be fed, to have a drink, to satisfy that hunger and thirst.

Is this what Jesus meant when he said that we are blessed when we hunger and thirst for righteousness?

Is this what we do?

  2. Ah, but everyone seems to have their own version of righteousness. That is good food for thought, though.

  3. I think for the desire--for anything. If the desire is not there the motivation to follow through and achieve will not be there.

  6. Some of God's commands, especially the ones that clearly directly benefit us, really scare me. I think this is one of them. Yes righteousness is great, but not having to live up to the expectation of righteousness is pretty nice. I know that's not really the way it works but it does feel that way often.

  7. similarly, i keep thinking about the rescued miners... how does it feel to really feel the sun warm on your face and to breathe a breath of fresh air? hunger, thirst, warmth, breath...

  8. I have read that verse before but never really reflected on the hunger and thirst - what that really means. I want to desire God and His Ways that way.

  9. i hear you. at this point i would really like to desire righteousness the way i desire chocolate. and that is a far cry off from being hungry and thirsty for it. *sigh* i guess the first step is recognizing the lack and then asking God for that hunger and thirst.

  14. I too thought of the miners(one of the others mentioned them). As I watched the news tonight, one miner tried to describe the intense hunger.
I think we can tell when we're really starving for God and are parched. Then it's up to us as to how we'll feed the hunger or if we'll truly feed it.
    A thought-provoking post--certainly made me think.
    Thanks for stopping by mine.
